Of those who wanted a large baby, a significantly greater proportion said they ate more food during pregnancy (see Table V). In North Kanara, almost all women preferred a small baby. Appropriate food quantity did not differ significantly according to baby size preference (see Table VI). Of the total sample population, 33% of the women who stated a preference for a small baby also deemed it appropriate to consume more food. A question arose as to whether the association of more food with smaller baby size revealed a mode of reasoning or whether chance or error had determined the responses of the 78 women (Tables Vand VI).
In other cases, analogies, a common means of description used by informants to explain body processes, are highlighted. Following the collection of qualitative data, a data profile on the ethnophysiology and folk dietetics of pregnancy was constructed. Key ideas concerning the contingency of pregnancy, appropriate dietary behavior, and preferred baby size, identified on this profile, were surveyed to ascertain 32 SECTION ONE their pervasiveness in the general population.
