1880. This photograph is believed to be the oldest view of this grand building. The central portion was originally built in 1832 by Gen. Francis Preston and his wife Sarah Buchanan Campbell Preston as a private home (see page 35). From 1860 until 1919, the building was the Martha Washington College for women until it became part of Emory & Henry College from 1919 until 1932. Martha Washington College had over 350 graduates from many different states. The college advertised steam heating and lighting by incandescent electric lights.
